SEO vs GEO vs AEO: what is the actual difference?
SEO, GEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are three terms that get used interchangeably. Here each one is defined with its source, and kept separate.
Every definition here is sourced. Reviewed August 2026.
In one line, how do SEO, GEO and AEO differ?
SEO optimises for ranking in the classic search results in Google Search. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) optimises to be included and cited inside AI-generated answers, in tools like Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) optimises to be the sourced answer an answer engine returns. The difference is which surface each one targets.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the exception. It has no single agreed source, and its boundary with GEO is contested.
SEO vs GEO vs AEO, side by side: how do they compare?
| SEO | Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) | Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it optimises | Ranking of pages in classic unpaid search results | Inclusion and citation inside AI-generated answers | Being the direct sourced answer an answer engine returns |
| Where the answer appears | The classic results page in Google Search and Bing | Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Google Gemini and similar generative answers | AI answer boxes, assistants and featured answers |
| Unit of work | The web page | The passage quoted in an answer | The direct answer to a question |
| Primary source | Wikipedia entry (documented) | The 2023 paper arXiv 2311.09735 (documented) | No single agreed source (contested) |
| Status | Documented | Documented | Contested; overlaps with GEO |
- The clearest difference is which surface each one targets.
AI answers can recommend products now, so the feed and catalogue behind your store matter as much as the page.

What is still contested?
- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and GEO are separate disciplinesSources use the two terms interchangeably, and the boundary between them is not agreed.
- SEO is deadAI answers still draw on ranked, organic content, so SEO is changing rather than ending.
- llms.txt improves AI visibilityNo search platform documents llms.txt as an input to AI visibility.
The work that earns a ranking is also the work an AI answer draws on when it decides what to cite.
What is documented?
- AI answers cite sourcesGoogle AI Overviews and AI answers exist, cite sources, and are observable in Google Search, ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
- GEO methods are testedA peer-reviewed paper, arXiv 2311.09735, reports up to 40 percent more visibility from information-gain tactics.
- No special schema neededGoogle's AI-features documentation, from Google Search Central, states no special schema or AI files are needed to appear.
Questions we get asked
No. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) extend SEO rather than replace it. AI answers in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT are largely assembled from content that already ranks in classic search, so ranking still matters. AI visibility is a new layer on top of it.
GEO targets citation inside AI answers; SEO targets ranking on the results page. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about being quoted by an AI answer, while SEO is about ranking a page in classic search. The same content can serve both, so it is rarely a choice between them.
Loosely, yes. AI SEO, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are all used for overlapping ideas: getting your content into AI answers. The difference is that only GEO has a defining academic paper behind it. The others are vendor terms with no single source.
There is no single agreed best tool. Vendors sell competing Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and AI-visibility tools, and no neutral authority ranks them. Treat any best-tool list as a vendor claim, and judge a tool by whether it measures the AI answers your buyers see.
Google Ads runs the paid campaigns; Google Merchant Center holds the product data those shopping results and AI answers read. Google Ads is where you buy and manage placements. Google Merchant Center is where your product feed lives, and that feed is part of what AI shopping answers draw on.
No. SEO is changing as AI answers draw on ranked content, but it is not dead. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT still assemble their answers largely from pages that rank well, so ranking still feeds those answers. SEO is becoming the input to AI visibility rather than a casualty of it.
For a UAE e-commerce brand, the practical shift is that AI answers can recommend products, not only pages. So the data those systems read, your product feed and catalogue, starts to matter as much as the page. Shopping answers read structured product data through systems like Google Merchant Center and the Google Shopping Graph. On a Shopify store, that data is your feed and catalogue.
