The AI-Search Shift: What Actually Changed, and What Has Not
AI search is changing how people find and shop for products: search engines and assistants now answer and recommend directly instead of only listing blue links.
Written from what Google and OpenAI document, for e-commerce founders in the UAE. No results claimed here, only the evidence.
What is the AI-search shift, in plain terms?
The AI-search shift is the change from search engines that list links to engines and assistants that answer and recommend directly. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT now reply in the results themselves, so fewer searches end in a click, and being the source an AI cites can matter as much as ranking.
Three things are true at once: the shift is real, most of the AI magic sold around it is not, and the UAE evidence today is intent rather than mass behaviour.
How is AI search actually different from the Google you already know?
-
01Who answers the query Classic Google returns a ranked list of pages you read and decide from. AI search writes the answer at the top, before the links.
-
02Where the click goes A result was clicked in about 15% of visits with no AI summary, and about 8% when a summary appeared. The summary's own source link was clicked in about 1%.
-
03How often it happens AI summaries showed on about 53% of searches of ten or more words, against about 18% of all Google searches.
-
04What wins Classic search rewards ranking in the top results. AI search rewards being cited or recommended inside the answer.
-
05What a store must get right Rank-worthy pages a shopper can click, plus clear product data and content worth quoting, so an AI can lift it.
What does the AI-search shift mean for your store, and what should you do first?
- 01Check what AI can read about your productsStart with your product data, for example your Google Merchant Center feed, and confirm it is complete and machine-readable.
- 02Make your content answer-first and worth citingAdd original, checkable information rather than more volume; the GEO research links information gain to higher visibility in AI answers, up to 40%.
- 03Measure whether AI systems cite youTrack real mentions and citations with a named tool, so you are working from evidence rather than hope.
- 04Fix the data layer, not the mythsKeyword stuffing lowered AI visibility by about 8% in the same research, so put the effort into product data and quotable content.
OpenAI publishes a product feed it ingests, so the data layer is the work on Google and on assistants alike.
What do Google and OpenAI actually document, versus what agencies sell?
- Add an llms.txt file so AI can find you.Google says it does not need, and does not use, an llms.txt file.
- Install custom AI schema to get into AI answers.Google says there is no special schema.org markup to add for AI features.
- Buy an AI package that rewrites everything for the machines.Google says visibility comes from non-commodity content plus technical fundamentals.
- These specific feed fields are required by ChatGPT.OpenAI publishes a product feed spec that ChatGPT ingests to show products, so check any such list against the live spec first.
The real work is the documented work, not the myths.
What are the numbers behind the AI-search shift, and where do they come from?
- 18%Share of Google searches that showed an AI Overview, March 2025 (Pew Research Center, United States data).
- 8% vs 15%A traditional result was clicked in about 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without (Pew Research Center, 2025, United States data).
- Up to 40%Information-gain methods raised visibility in AI answers: quotations about +41%, statistics about +31%, cited sources about +28% (GEO paper, arXiv 2311.09735, KDD 2024).
- 37%UAE shoppers who expect to use AI chat or virtual assistants to shop within five years, stated intent (DHL E-Commerce Trends Report 2026).
Each figure is dated and sourced, and none of them is ours.
Questions we get asked
UAE shoppers have one real, dated figure on this, and it is a modest one. In the DHL E-Commerce Trends Report 2026, 37% named AI-powered chat or virtual assistants among the channels they expect to shop through within five years. That is stated intent about the future, not proof that most people buy through ChatGPT today. The same report says 51% already use AI chat tools while shopping online, which is chat-assisted research rather than buying through an assistant.
Search engine optimization (SEO) did not die in 2026; it changed shape. In its 2026 guide on AI features, Google states that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, so the same fundamentals, indexable pages and content worth quoting, still decide who gets cited in an AI answer. A page has to be indexable and eligible to be shown as a snippet before any AI can quote it.
An AI Overview and ChatGPT are both AI-written answers, but they are not the same thing. An AI Overview sits at the top of Google's own results, above the links. ChatGPT is a separate assistant you open on its own. Both read web content and can cite sources, which is why being quotable matters in either place.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is optimizing your content to be the answer an AI engine gives, rather than only a link it lists. Google frames it as part of search engine optimization (SEO), not a separate discipline. In practice the work overlaps almost entirely: clear structure, answer-first passages, and pages an engine can index and quote.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your content cited inside AI-generated answers, on tools like AI Overviews and ChatGPT. It sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it: research on GEO found that adding quotations, statistics, and cited sources raised AI visibility, while keyword stuffing lowered it.
ChatGPT can help with SEO, but it does not do SEO on its own. It is useful for drafts, outlines, and ideas, and it can speed up routine work. It does not replace the technical fixes, product-data work, and measurement that earn citations, and it can state wrong things confidently, so its output needs checking.
